Williams Clinches 3rd Place WWPA Finish In 20T

LA JOLLA, Calif. — Regulation and overtime were not enough in the third place match of the WWPA tournament, as the Seawolves and Otters were forced to play in a sudden death overtime. In the three minute sudden death overtime, the Seawolves won the drop and JoJo Williams scored the game winning goal with an assist from Taylor Brown giving Sonoma State a third place victory.

Through the first three period of the game, the Seawolves dominated the game. After the first period they lead the game 3-2 with goals by Amanda Weddle, Lily Carlon and Cassidy Mundt. At half time the Seawolves led 4-3.

Coming into the second half of the game, the Seawolves put two more goals on the board. Their first goal came within the first minute of the third period when Weddle scored her second goal of the game. The third period was ended with a Mundt goal giving the Seawolves a 6-4 lead. Mundt's day wasn't done yet, she started the fourth period the same way she ended the third, with her third goal of the day giving the Seawolves a commanding 7-4 lead with 4:55 left. The Seawolves defense would not be able to maintain the lead giving up three goals in the final 2:35 being forced to go into overtime.

The overtime period was two three-minute periods. Cal State Monterey Bay scored the first goal of overtime on a power play goal giving the Otters their first lead of the day. The Seawolves would be unable to score in the first overtime period. Down to their final few minutes of the season, the Seawolves found the game tying goal when Taylor Brown scored to tie the game up at 8 forcing the game to go into a sudden death overtime period.

In the sudden death overtime, the Seawolves got the ball first when Freshman Taylor Brooks won her fifth sprint of the day and the Seawolves managed to score on their first possession. JoJo Williams had the game winning goal clinching third place in the WWPA for the Seawolves.

The Seawolves end their season on a high note, getting third place in their division of eight teams. They finish the year 8-19.
