LA JOLLA, Calif. — After pulling off a first round upset against Fresno Pacific a day earlier, the Seawolves took on the #1 seeded UC San Diego Tritons on Saturday, looking to move on to the championship match of the WWPA Tournament. The Seawolves struck early but lost the match 11-1.
Sonoma State was the the first team on the board as
Taylor Brown netted a power play goal in the first period. After an exclusion on Hailey Atkinson, the Seawolves took advantage of being up one swimmer and scored, giving them an early 1-0 lead. However the Tritons would respond with a goal of their own tying the match 1-1. From there it was all San Diego.
Going into the second period the two teams were tied at 1. The Tritons would manage to score four unanswered goals in the period giving them a 5-1 lead at halftime. Coming out of the break the Seawolves tried to respond to the deficit but were unable to. In the second half Sonoma would give up six more goals and would fall to the Tritons 11-1.
Lisa Rodarmel started as goalie for the Seawolves and had ten saves, but gave up nine goals. Bennett Bugelli started in the net for UC San Diego and had 13 saves and gave up a goal.
The Seawolves move to 7-19 and will play in the third place game tomorrow against Cal State Monterey Bay. The Seawolves have won both games against the Otters this season. The match will begin at 11:20 am.
