GENEVA, Ohio -- The Sonoma State women's water polo team saw its 2017 season come to an end Sunday in the 2017 WWPA championship game, suffering a 15-4 loss to top-seed and 18th-ranked UC San Diego at SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. Despite the loss, the Seawolves (11-19), who entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed, placed second in the annual conference championship tournament, their highest-ever finish in the event.
UC San Diego (19-14) captures its sixth WWPA title and secures the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Women's Water Polo Championships.
Cassidy Mundt and
Nicole Groat supplied the only offense for Sonoma, each throwing in two goals. SSU goalie
Taylor Plorin made 12 saves in the loss and
Lyndsie Williams grabbed four steals. The Seawolves had no answer for the Tritons, who scored on nearly half of their shots. 2017 WWPA Player of the year Lauren Boyer torched the SSU defense for six goals and WWPA Tournament MVP Alexis Wieseler threw in four goals and added four steals on defense.
It was Sonoma State's first-ever trip to the WWPA final, thanks to a thrilling 7-6 upset win over rival Cal State East Bay a day earlier.
At the conclusion of the tournament, three Sonoma State players were selected to the WWPA All-Tournament Team --
Carleigh Robinson and
Taylor Plorin earned First Team All-Tournament Team honors while
Lyndsie Williams grabbed a Second Team All-Tournament nod.
No. 2 seed Cal State East Bay went on to defeat No. 4 Cal State Monterey Bay in the 3rd Place Game on Sunday by a score of 16-7.
