ROHNERT PARK --
David Ahern scored two of his career-high 19 points with 4.7 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, but the Sonoma State men's basketball team netted just two points in the extra five-minute period to drop a 79-69 decision to visiting Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday night at The Wolves' Den.  The Seawolves fall to 6-19 overall and 5-16 in the CCAA, while the Otters improve to 10-14 and 8-13.

Sonoma led 61-53 with 6:12 to play in the second half, thanks to a near perfect shooting effort in the final 20 minutes of regulation.  In fact, up until the 6:12 mark, the Seawolves were 11 of 16 from the field, a blazing 68.8 percent, but it wouldn't continue.  In the final minutes, SSU turned the ball over three times, went 2 for 4 from the hardwood and just 2 for 5 from the free throw line, which allowed CSU Monterey Bay to rally and eventually take a three-point lead on two different occasions, the final time with 1:56 left, a 65-62 advantage.

A free throw by Michael Avery cut the SSU deficit to two with 1:39 left on the clock, then a layup by Ahern with 47 seconds remaining that was the beginning of an and-one opportunity, but Ahern failed to connect on the free shot and the game stayed at a 65-65 deadlock.  On the Otters' next possession, they grabbed an offensive rebounds off of a missed shot and put it back with 11 ticks left to take a 67-65 lead.  After a CSUMB timeout, Ahern took he ball down court, drove the lane and converted the layup to again knot the game, this time at 67-67.  Out of an SSU timeout, Cal State Monterey Bay drove back down the court and the game-winning shot attempt rimmed off and the game went to overtime.

However, that's when the Seawolves managed just two points, going from a 13 for 18 effort in the second half to a dismal 1 for 7 showing in overtime while allowing the Otters 12 points, and the win.

Despite the fact that Sonoma State held an eight-point lead late in the game and shot better from the field overall (50 percent to 46.8 percent), SSU played from behind for the majority of the contest.  Cal State Monterey Bay took advantage of every Sonoma State mistake, outscoring the Seawolves 24-11 in points off turnovers -- SSU committed 18 to CSUMB's 13.  The Otters also outrebounded the Seawolves, 39-28, including 12-3 on the offensive glass.

It was the second time in as many games that Ahern tallied 19 points, he did so in a 76-58 win at UC San Diego last Saturday.  Avery chipped in with 13 points off the bench and Steve Lackey netted 12.

For Cal State Monterey Bay, Ryan Nitz led all players with 27 points, Alex Fertig added 16 and Greg Anderson had 13.

Sonoma State will wrap up the 2013-14 season on Saturday night when it hosts Cal State East Bay at 7:30 pm.  The Seawolves will honor four seniors prior to Saturday's tipoff -- Sterling Arterberry, Justin Herold, Steve Lackey and Jason Walter -- as part of Senior Night festivities.
