Arterberry, Seawolves Sink Otters; Pushes Win Streak To Four

Junior Sterling Arterberry led the Seawolves in scoring for the second straight game.
BOX SCORE ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Sterling Arterberry scored a team-high 19 points and handed out four assists, helping the Sonoma State men's basketball team, which made a season-high 32 free throws, hold off a stingy Cal State Monterey Bay team for a 80-77 victory on Thursday night at The Wolves' Den.  The Seawolves (11-8, 9-6 CCAA) continue their roll, having now won nine of their last 11 games, placing themselves within one half game of fourth place in the CCAA standings.  The Otters, who haven't won since Dec. 3 -- a streak of 13 straight losses -- stumble to just 2-16 overall and 1-13 in conference play.

Despite its 12-game losing streak coming into Thursday's contest, Cal State Monterey Bay fought from start to finish, forcing seven ties and ten lead changes over the course of the night.  However, it was Sonoma State that prevailed, as the team shot 47.8 percent from the floor (22-46) and scored 32 points from the free throw line on 47 attempts -- CSUMB only shot 17 free throws on Thursday, making ten of them.

Arterberry's 19 led the Seawolves for the second straight game, complemented by 15 points from Will Olsem and 14 points from Patrick ScottSteven Pratt chipped in with nine points with six rebounds, five assists and two steals, while Brian Crow also netted nine points off the bench.  Justin Herold scored eight and brought down seven rebounds, but Sonoma was outrebounded by CSUMB, 40-32, due in large part to 17 rebounds by Kevin Loustale.

The Otters also used the long ball to stay close with the Seawolves, hitting 11 of the 19 shots they took from outside, holding the sharpshooting hosts to just 4 of 12 from beyond the arc.  CSUMB's Brandon Ward dropped in a game-high 31 points, hitting eight of the 11 Otter three-pointers.

Neither team led by more than eight points at any time on Thursday, and it was Cal State Monterey Bay to achieve that eight-point lead first on a three-ball by Ward at the 13:15 mark of the first half, putting the Otters up 14-6.  Sonoma State charged right back, eventually regaining the lead at 21-19, five minutes later.  The teams would trade baskets, but the Seawolves remained in command and, after a three-pointer by Olsem at the 2:23 mark, led 35-29.  CSUMB battled back and knotted the game at 36-36, heading into the halftime intermission.

It was a closely contested second half, but Sonoma State would finally put the brakes on Cal State Monterey Bay after a pair of free throws by Pratt with 41 seconds left that put the Seawolves up 76-68.  Two Otter three-pointers in the final seven seconds of the game would make the game look closer than it was, but Olsem, Pratt and Dougan Patience contributed at the charity stripe late to hold CSUMB off in the final moments.

Sonoma State, which will play five of its last seven games within the friendly confines of The Wolves' Den, will return to action on Saturday when it plays host to Cal State East Bay (7-11, 5-9 CCAA).  Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
