Seawolves Drop Saturday Contest To Warriors, 73-61

Patrick Scott netted 13 points to lead the scoring for Sonoma State in Saturday's loss.
BOX SCORE ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Patrick Scott scored a team-high 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds, but Sonoma State, which shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half, fell cold in the final 20 minutes of the game, dropping a 73-61 decision to visiting Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park.  The Seawolves (2-6, 0-4 CCAA) have lost five straight games and remain winless in conference, while the Warriors improve to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the CCAA.

It was a very close contested game throughout the first half, as the Seawolves played tight with the Warriors, who came into the game as winners in five of their first six games to start the 2011-12 season.  In fact, Sonoma State held a six-point lead on a pair of occasions.  However, Cal State Stanislaus would come right back and go up by five at 31-26 with 4:47 to play in the opening period.

The Seawolves would chip away at the deficit and a pair of free throws by Scott with three seconds left put SSU up 37-35, but a made jumper by the Warriors' Dan Daviess to beat the buzzer knotted the halftime score at 37-37.

The second half quickly became a different story, however, as Cal State Stanislaus held Sonoma State scoreless for the first 6:35 after intermission until Scott hit a couple of free throws to end the drought, but the Seawolves found themselves trailing by 11 points (50-39).  It wasn't until the 9:35 mark of the period that SSU finally hit a shot from the floor, a jumper by Brian Crow to cut the CSUS lead to 14 at 55-41.

Even after missing the first 12 shots of the second half, the Seawolves still hung around.  It wasn't until with 1:29 left in the game that six free throws by the Warriors in a span of 19 seconds eventually put the game away for good.

A hot start (11 for 22) that turned cold in the second half (8 for 28), Sonoma State hit on 19 of 50 from the floor for 38.0 percent.  Meanwhile, Cal State Stanislaus converted 45.1 percent of its shots (23 of 51) and added 21 of 27 (77.8 percent) from the free throw line.

Justin Herold made his Seawolf debut on Saturday, scoring nine points off the bench with four rebounds and a blocked shot.  Steven Pratt chipped in with eight points and had a game-high nine rebounds with three assists.  His three assists tied him with Antoine Woods atop the school's all-time leaderboard with 305.

For Cal State Stanislaus, Reggie Jones led all scorers with 16 points while Vince Fuller (15 points) and Brett Sayad (11) added double-figures as well.

Sonoma State will return to action on Monday when it hosts rival Chico State (7-2, 2-2 CCAA) at 7:30 p.m. in The Wolves' Den.  The Wildcats upset No. 8 Humboldt State on Saturday night in Arcata, 65-63.
