Patrick Scott scored a career-high 33 points, but the Sonoma State men's basketball team fell short of an upset, losing 97-89 to Concordia University of Irvine (CA), the fourth-ranked team in the NAIA Division I Top 25 Coaches' Poll, on Saturday night to wrap up the 11th Annual Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic at The Wolves' Den. The Seawolves fall even to 1-1 on the year while the Eagles narrowly escape Rohnert Park with a 4-0 record thus far in 2011-12.
Concordia earned its second Logsdon title in three years, thanks to the play of tournament MVP Austin Simon, who averaged 21.5 points in the two games. Scott and
Will Olsem received Logsdon Classic All-Tournament honors for Sonoma State.
It was an extremely physical game that went back and forth, featuring 12 ties and 14 lead changes. When push came to shove, though, it was Concordia who won the turnover battle. The Eagles scored 32 points off 23 Sonoma State turnovers while the Seawolves only scored eight points on 16 CUI muscues.
Neither team would lead by more than four points until Concordia finally grabbed a seven-point advantage at 29-22 wih 8:08 left in the first. After trading points back and forth with the Seawolves, the Eagles would extend their lead to as much as nine (40-31) with 3:09 left in the opening period. Sonoma State would end up cutting the lead to six on a a pair of free throws by
Jason Walter with four seconds left, but Concordia would hold a 43-37 lead at the intermission.
It was the
Patrick Scott/Donnell Phifer show though, as the two lead each of their respective teams with 18 points apiece.
In the second half, the Seawolves would remain close and even took a five-point lead on a pair of occasions, the last one coming at the 6:21 mark of regulation when SSU led 80-75 on a three-pointer by Olsem.
From that point on, it was all Concordia, as the NAIA team from Irvine went on to outscore Sonoma State 22-9 the rest of the way to secure the eight-point 97-89 victory and its second Logsdon Classic title.
Scott hit on 10 of 16 shots from the field, adding 12 of 14 from the free throw line to lead all scorers.
Sterling Arterberry chipped in with 21 points and added a team-high eight rebounds. Olsem hit four three-pointers and scored 15 points while
Steven Pratt dished out a game-high nine assists. The Seawolves shot better from the field than the Eagles (50.0%-46.0%), but CUI hit 34 of 38 shots from the charity stripe, compared to 21 of 26 from the line for SSU.
Phifer led Concordia with 27 points, 17 of which came from the free throw line. Four others scored in double-figures, including 18 from tournament MVP Simon.
Sonoma State will be back in action on Thanksgiving weekend, participating at the Notre Dame de Namur Invitational in Belmont next Friday and Saturday. The Seawolves will face Dominican on Friday (5:00 pm) before taking on host Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday at 7:00 pm.
