Seawolves Earn Bid To Host NCAA West Regionals

The second-seeded Seawolves will host the NCAA West Region tournament.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Following a record-breaking regular season and its first-ever California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) tournament championship, the Sonoma State softball team will look to continue its success on into the 2010 NCAA Division II Softball Championships, in which the Seawolves will play host to a four-team “sub-regional” beginning on Friday at Seawolf Field in Rohnert Park.

Sonoma State (42-16) enters the 64-team field as the No. 2 seed in the west region and will welcome No. 3 seed Grand Canyon, No. 6 seed Chico State and No. 7 seed Dixie State to Northern California for a four-team “sub-regional”, similar to the format of the CCAA championships in Stockton two weekends ago. The Seawolves will face Dixie State in the first round on Friday; first pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Seawolf Field. Grand Canyon and Chico State will open the tournament at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.

The winner of the double-elimination tournament will take on the winner of the other sub-regional, hosted by top-seeded Hawaii Pacific in Kaneohe, Hawaii, next weekend at a site to be determined.

It is the second consecutive year, and third time in the last four seasons that the Seawolves will compete in the NCAA tournament. SSU was knocked out of last season's sub-regional championship game in Arcata after two losses to Cal State Stanislaus.

Sonoma State, ranked 19th in last week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) poll, set a new program record for most wins in a season with 42. The Seawolves also shattered the previous single-season home run record of 24 with 51 blasts this season.

As always, if you're unable to make it to Rohnert Park for the weekend, games featuring Sonoma State will be broadcast on the Seawolf Sports Network.
