ROHNERT PARK, Calif- The Sonoma State baseball team has been tabbed to finish second in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings this season, based on a vote by conference coaches that was released Thursday.
In addition, Sonoma State and UC San Diego each received five votes to capture the CCAA tournament title, which is scheduled for May 6-8 at the University of Pacific's Klein Family Field in Stockton.
The Seawolves garnered 92 points and four first-place votes, finishing just behind UC San Diego who grabbed 96 points and six first-place votes as the CCAA's pick to win the conference. The Tritons, who defeated the Seawolves in the NCAA West Region title game last season, is coming off its most successful season in the program's history and is ranked No. 1 nationally in the Ping!Baseball Preseason Poll and No. 3 by Collegiate Baseball.
In his 25th season as the head coach of the Seawolves,
John Goelz will look to return to the NCAA West Regional tournament for the fourth consecutive season. With returning pitchers Kendall Davis and Brian Flint, infielder Ryan Stevens and outfielders Cameron Cook and Kyle Jones along with a plethora of highly regarded transfers, Sonoma State will be one of the toughest teams in the West Region in 2010.
Chico State (84 votes) was third in the balloting, followed by Cal State L.A. (66), Cal State Dominguez Hills (60), Cal Poly Pomona (55), Cal State Stanislaus (43), Cal State Monterey Bay (21), San Francisco State (20) and Cal State East Bay (16).
Sonoma State will kick off its 2010 schedule on Feb. 2 when the Seawolves host San Francisco State in a non-conference game at Seawolf Diamond in Rohnert Park. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
