ROHNERT PARK, Calif- One week after being designated for assignment by the Oakland Athletics, former Sonoma State slugger Tommy Everidge has been claimed by one of the Athletics' American League West rivals, the Seattle Mariners.
Everidge, who played at Sonoma State from 2002 to 2004, made his major league debut last season for the Oakland Athletics, hitting .224 with two home runs and seven RBIs in 24 games. He also hit .368 for Sacramento in the Pacific Coast League.
Everidge was added to Seattle's 40-Man roster, meaning he will be eligible to play in the major leagues. He figures to contribute for the Mariners at the first base and designated hitter positions. Recent acquisition Casey Kotchman (first base) and future Hall of Famer Ken Griffey, Jr. (designated hitter) are already on the roster.
The Mariners acquired Cliff Lee and Chone Figgins this offseason and many pundits expect them to battle the Los Angeles Angels for supremacy in the AL West.
