Seawolves Survive Another Thriller, Continue Run

KEIZER, Ore- Brian Wright scampered home with the game-winning run in the tenth inning on Saturday afternoon as Sonoma State won another thriller, 3-2 over Western Oregon at the NCAA West Regionals in Keizer, Oregon.  Western Oregon had tied the game up at two in the top of the ninth before a Sonoma rally ended their season a few minutes later.  The Seawolves will now take on UC San Diego for the regional championship.  The Seawolves and Tritons hit the field at 3:00 pm on Saturday and if Sonoma wins, they'll play another game on Sunday.

It was the second consecutive walk-off win for the Seawolves, coming a day after they came back to stun Cal State Dominguez Hills in game three of the tournament.   The 11th-ranked Seawolves improve to 34-15 on the season.  The 18th-ranked Wolves see their season end at 34-14.

The Seawolves got a tremendous outing from senior southpaw Morgan Rodriguez, who went seven and two-thirds, scattering five hits and allowing no runs.  Rodriguez was matched pitch-for-pitch by Mike Eisenhauer of WOU until the sixth inning when Ryan Stevens blasted a two-run home run to right center field.  Stevens' fourth home run of the year made it 2-0 Sonoma State and that lead would hold until the ninth. 

As Sonoma State had the day before, Western Oregon refused to give in, scoring on an triple by Drew Humphrey to cut the lead in half, then plating the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Mieras.

In the bottom of the ninth, with one out, Danny Pignataro started the rally when he was hit by a pitch.  After Wright was inserted as a pinch-runner, Mark Pestorich chopped a double down the left field line.  The Wolves would intentionally walk Jonathan Lewis before Nick Ramos sent a ground ball through the third baseman's legs and in to left field.

After the game, an elated Morgan Rodriguez said, "I was just going out there and throwing strikes.  I tried to let my defense work behind me."  And work behind them they did, making several tremendous plays to preserve the Sonoma State lead. 

Kendall Davis would get the victory after throwing an inning and a third.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Sonoma State outfielder Tillman Pugh, who sat out the 2010 season as a redshirt, has been selected in the 15th round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the New York Mets.  Pugh was the 452nd overall pick and the second NCAA Division II west region player to be drafted, behind teammate Scott Alexander.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Junior southpaw Scott Alexander, an All-CCAA Honorable Mention pick in 2010, has been selected in the sixth round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Kansas City Royals.  As the 179th overall pick in the draft, Alexander becomes Sonoma State's highest draftee since Brandon Burgess in 2004.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Co-leading the Sonoma State baseball team in batting average this season with a .351 mark, Kyle Jones was selected to the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association (NCBWA) Division II West Region Team, it was announced Wednesday afternoon.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- While the season may be over for the SSU baseball squad, Kyle Jones and Max Shupe picked up Second Team All-CCAA honors for their outstanding performances in the field. In addition, Scott Alexander received an All-CCAA Honorable Mention for his exploits on the mound. The announcements were made Wednesday from the conference office.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Sonoma State got contributions from up and down the roster on Sunday afternoon on their way to a wild 13-9 victory over Cal Poly Pomona in the series and season finale for both teams.  The Seawolves will see their 2010 campaign end with a 24-28, 17-23 CCAA record.  The Broncos fall to 26-27, 18-22 CCAA.
