Seawolves Refuse To Lose; Top Toros In Ten

Joe Slater saved the season with three-run double in the ninth
SALEM, Ore-  One inning after Joe Slater came up with a bases loaded double to tie the game, Jonathan Lewis ended it with a bases loaded single in the tenth as Sonoma State earned a thrilling 7-6 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills to stay alive at the NCAA West Regional Tournament in Salem, Oregon.  The Seawolves trailed by four heading into the ninth inning before their furious rally kept their regional title hopes alive.  Sonoma will now play the loser of tonight's UC San Diego/Western Oregon game, tomorrow at 11:00 am.

After the game, head coach John Goelz said, "It's great to still be playing.  We're looking at it like it's a one game season right now."

The Seawolves broke through for the game's first run in the third inning when a two-out error put Nick Ramos on base before Slater drove him home with a single up the middle.  The Toros would bounce back with a pair of runs in the fifth on a two-run double by Kevin Pillar.

After the Seawolves drew even in the sixth on an Ian Bridges RBI single, the Toros surged ahead again with a run in the eighth.  In the ninth, the Toros scored three runs, all of them coming on a bases loaded triple by Andrew Baslow.  That made the score 6-2 and put the Seawolves' season on the brink of elimination.

The Sonoma rally started in the ninth when Bridges laced a double to left field.  After a walk by Danny Pignataro, Thomas Pope singled to load the bases with nobody out.  The lead was cut to three by the next batter, Jacob Fiss, when he hit a sacrifice fly to center field. 

After Ryan Stevens struck out for the second out of the inning, head coach John Goelz inserted Brian Wright as a pinch-hitter.  Wright would walk on five pitches to set up Slater's dramatic at bat.  After working the count to 2-1, Slater launched a fly ball to right center field that landed just out of the reach of right fielder Andrew Baslow, scoring all three runners and tying the game at six.

In the tenth, Sonoma State got a break when Pignataro reached on an error with one out.  Following an intentional walk to Max Kirk, Jacob Fiss walked on a full count to bring up Lewis.  The senior took one ball out of the zone, then smoked a grounder through a drawn in infield to bring home Pignataro with the winning run.

Gary Moran got the start for Sonoma State and he pitched well, allowing just six hits and two runs in seven innings of work.  Kendall Davis picked up the win after throwing two pitches in the tenth inning.

Phillip Van Doren, the Toro starter, went eight very solid innings before turning it over to a bullpen that couldn't hold the Seawolves off.

Slater finished the game with four runs batted in and he was one of three Seawolves (Bridges, Pope) with multiple hits.

Saturday's game will be broadcast on the Seawolf Sports Network.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Hard throwing right-hander Tyler Hess has become the third Sonoma State player to be drafted in the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft.  The Alamo native was selected in the 19th round by the Atlanta Braves.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Sonoma State outfielder Tillman Pugh, who sat out the 2010 season as a redshirt, has been selected in the 15th round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the New York Mets.  Pugh was the 452nd overall pick and the second NCAA Division II west region player to be drafted, behind teammate Scott Alexander.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Junior southpaw Scott Alexander, an All-CCAA Honorable Mention pick in 2010, has been selected in the sixth round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Kansas City Royals.  As the 179th overall pick in the draft, Alexander becomes Sonoma State's highest draftee since Brandon Burgess in 2004.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Co-leading the Sonoma State baseball team in batting average this season with a .351 mark, Kyle Jones was selected to the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association (NCBWA) Division II West Region Team, it was announced Wednesday afternoon.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- While the season may be over for the SSU baseball squad, Kyle Jones and Max Shupe picked up Second Team All-CCAA honors for their outstanding performances in the field. In addition, Scott Alexander received an All-CCAA Honorable Mention for his exploits on the mound. The announcements were made Wednesday from the conference office.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Sonoma State got contributions from up and down the roster on Sunday afternoon on their way to a wild 13-9 victory over Cal Poly Pomona in the series and season finale for both teams.  The Seawolves will see their 2010 campaign end with a 24-28, 17-23 CCAA record.  The Broncos fall to 26-27, 18-22 CCAA.
