Baseball Drops NCAA Opener To Western Oregon

SALEM, Ore-  Sonoma State could muster just three hits on Thursday night in a 3-1 defeat to Western Oregon in their opener at the NCAA West Regional Tournament at Volcanoes Stadium in Salem, Oregon.  The loss sends the Seawolves into an elimination game tomorrow at 2:00 pm against Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Seawolves go to 32-15 on the year while the Wolves, now 34-12, will head into a showdown tomorrow evening against UC San Diego.

Sonoma picked up the game's first run in the fourth inning when Joe Slater doubled, then came around to score on an Ian Bridges single up the middle.  Unfortunately, that single by Bridges would be the final hit of the game for the Seawolves.

The Wolves tied the game in the fourth when a run came home on a bases loaded double play. They went ahead the next inning when Garrett Breda knocked a two-out, two-run double to left center.

Keith Thompson got the start for Sonoma State and he pitched well early, holding Western Oregon without a hit until a bunt single by Justin Speer in the fourth.  In fact, Thompson and reliever Taylor Lewis did a nice job against the Wolves all game long, allowing just two hits to the outfield.  Western Oregon was, however, able to take advantage of  four walks,  three hit batsmen four infield singles.

The Seawolves will need a bounce back performance tomorrow against Cal State Dominguez Hills.  Game time is set for 2:00 pm and the action will be broadcast on the Seawolf Sports Network.
