Seawolves Hold Their Own Against No. 6 Humboldt

Kayla Ledford
Freshman hurler Kayla Ledford pitched a great game on Friday afternoon
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Sonoma State got several gritty performances on Friday, but they still ended up on the wrong end of a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the sixth-ranked team in the nation, Humboldt State.  The Lumberjacks won by scores of 3-1 and 3-0 to improve to 42-14, 19-7 CCAA.  The Seawolves drop to 16-30, 3-21 CCAA.

The 'Jacks pounded out 11 hits in the opener, but SSU pitcher Brittany Williams was successful at working herself out of jams.  HSU got on the board with a single run in the third on an RBI double by Marissa Slattery.  The lead was pushed to 3-0 in the fifth when reigning CCAA Player of the Year Natalie Galletly crushed a two-run homer to center field.

Lizzy Prescott, last year's CCAA Pitcher of the Year, struck out 12 Seawolves on her way to her 32nd win of the season.  The Seawolves got five singles off the All-American.

Humboldt turned to Prescott again in the second game and she produced just as brilliant a performance.  The senior held the Seawolves hitless until the sixth inning when Kayla Ledford drilled a line drive single to left.

As good as Prescott was, she was nearly matched by Ledford, SSU's freshman pitcher.  The 'Jacks had no runs and just six hits though six innings as the teams entered the final frame of regulation in a scoreless tie.  After one out, HSU's Caitlin Klug hit a ball to SSU second baseman Britni Geary, who's throw was errant.  That miscue would come back to haunt the Seawolves a few batters later.  After a ground out and a couple of intentional walks to load the bases, center fielder Chrissy Motzny smashed a double to right center to make it 3-0 Humboldt.

SSU tried to put together a rally in the seventh with a leadoff double by Brittany Williams, but Prescott got the final three batters to seal the win.

The teams will get together tomorrow in another doubleheader starting at noon.
