IRVINE, Calif. -- Sonoma State senior
Leire Martinez has been named the PacWest Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for February 23rd through March 1st. The Santurtzi, Spain native helped the 25th-ranked Seawolves to a perfect 2-0 week with wins over Mills College and Dominican University.
Martinez won both of her singles matches at the No. 1 position, extending her winning streak to six matches in a row. She bested Mills' Noelani Meteyry, 6-0, 6-0 before beating nationally-ranked Rickimae Torres of Dominican, 6-3, 6-1. She also teamed up with
Jacquelyn Ward to earn two wins in doubles.
For the season, Martinez has compiled a record of 7-1 at the No. 1 singles position. Her career record stands at an impressive 27-4 and her career winning percentage of .871 is the best in school history.
Now 6-3 on the year, the Seawolves hit the road this weekend to take on #15 UC San Diego and #23 Cal State L.A.
