VALLEJO, Calif. -- Justin Shluker,
Nicolas Daniels and
Eric Ash all tied for 12th place on the individual leaderboard with an 11-over-par score of 227 as the Sonoma State men's golf team held on to finish in second place despite strong winds and a furious rally by Chico State in the final round of the 2015 Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club in Vallejo.
No. 10 Cal State Monterey Bay captured the team championship at 897 (+33), 10 strokes ahead of the Seawolves at 907 (+43) and 13 ahead of No. 3 Chico State, which posted the lowest score in the third round to climb up from eighth place to third place on the final day at 910 (+46). Dixie State's Kenny You (218; +2) captured individual medalist honors at the event, which served as a preview for the NCAA Division II West Regionals in May.
Ash (71-74-82--227) was tied for second place after Monday's second round, but a tough third round dropped him to 12th with Shluker (74-79-74) and Daniels (74-75-78--227).
Brandon Lee tied for 29th with scores of 75, 78 and 77 for a total of 230 (+14), followed by
Kyle Listar, who carded rounds of 75, 86 and 78 for a score of 239 (+23).
Kenny Maroney competed as an individual in the event, shooting a 74-77-84--235 (+19).
Sonoma State will wrap up its regular season schedule in two weeks at the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational in Turlock (on Apr. 13-14) before competing in the CCAA Championships in Stockton the following week.
The Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout is named after the University's former head football and golf coach, who was posthumously inducted into the CSUEB Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014.
