ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Offensively, the Sonoma State women's basketball team just couldn't get their game in gear on Saturday night as Cal State East Bay emerged from The Wolves' Den with a 62-50 win over the Seawolves. Sonoma suffered from their second lowest field goal percentage of the year, which resulted in the Pioneers salvaging a season split. The Seawolves drop to 8-12, 6-10 CCAA while the Pioneers finished off an impressive weekend road sweep, improving to 8-13, 5-10 CCAA.
From the beginning on Saturday night, it was apparent that things wouldn't come easy for either team on the offensive end. In fact, the score was just 2-0 nearly five minutes into the game, before
Travis Newman finally collected the Seawolves' first basket.
Points continued to be at a premium until the final six minutes of the half, when Sonoma threw down a quick 8-0 run to take a 14-12 lead. By the end of the first half, the Pioneers would retake the lead, 23-22.
Knotted at 24 the game turned into one of streaks. First, Cal State East Bay surged ahead with a 7-0 run to make it 31-24. Once that flurry was over, the Seawolves responded with seven straight of their own to tie it back up. This was followed by another 6-0 run by Cal State East Bay which enabled them to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Sonoma State would narrow the gap to two on two occasions- at 37-35 with 10:19 to go and at 39-37 with 8:56 left. However, they couldn't quite get around the Pioneers as, eventually, Cal State East Bay turned in a 16-6 run to put the game away.
The Seawolves shot just 32.7% for the game, connecting on just 18 of their 55 field goal attempts. They were 2-of-20 (10.0%) from beyond the arc and 12-of-19 (63.2%) from the free throw line.
Newman paced the Seawolves with 10 points.
Elizabeth Day added seven points and a team-high nine rebounds .
Cal State East Bay shot 36.7% from the field and 21.1% from three-point territory. They were led by 14 points from Lauren Lucchesi and Brianna Terrance. For the Pioneers, Saturday night's win avenged a 59-35 loss to Sonoma State in Hayward back on December 2nd.
Up next for the Seawolves is another big home weekend. On Thursday night, Cal State L.A. comes to town for Pack The Den Night. Two nights later, Cal State Dominguez Hills arrives in time for Pink Zone as the Seawolves show their support for breast cancer awareness.
