BOX SCORE SANTA ROSA, Calif-
Jaclyn Bisordi scored a game-high 14 points and recorded five rebounds and five assists to lead the Sonoma State women's basketball team to a dominating 79-25 victory over William Jessup in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon at Haehl Pavilion in Santa Rosa. The 54-point win is the largest margin of victory since SSU defeated Pacific Union by 74 points (90-16) on Nov. 30, 2001 in Oakland. The Seawolves improve to 4-5 this season as the Warriors remain winless at 0-14.
Bisordi lead four other Seawolves who scored in double figures, including
Kristina Fahey (12 points),
Bronte Sheahan (12),
Desirae Sanchez (11) and
Travis Newman (10). It was the culmination of an efficient shooting night, as Sonoma State connected on 46.8 percent of its shots (29 of 62), including 6 of 20 from three-point range. Sanchez led the attack from outside, coming off the bench to go 3 for 3 from downtown. The Seawolves also hit 15 of their 16 free throws (93.8 percent) en route to the 54-point win.
The Sonoma State defense also played a huge part in the victory, forcing 35 William Jessup turnovers (17 of which came from steals); SSU scored 37 points off of those 35 miscues. The Seawolves also controlled the paint, outscoring the Warriors 36-12 down low, in addition to a 19-2 margin in fast break points.
William Jessup was led by the 11 points of Cassie Davidson, who shot just 4 of 12 from the field. As a team, the Warriors shot 23.7 percent (9 of 38), including only 1 of 18 (5.6 percent) from beyond the three-point arc.
The Seawolves scored the game's first four points on a
Aly Henington jumper and a pair of Bisordi free throws, but a string of six straight points put the Warriors up 6-4 at the 16:44 mark. However, Sonoma State came right back and reeled off a 12-0 run to lead 16-6 over a span of seven minutes. William Jessup would remain close, eventually cutting the SSU lead to eight points at 20-12 with 4:17 left in the opening half, but the Seawolves caught fire and enjoyed a 16-3 run to close out the period and lead 36-15 at halftime.
SSU remained hot and never let William Jessup get any closer as the Seawolves outpointed the Warriors, 43-10 in the final 20 minutes alone. A three-pointer by Sanchez with 47 ticks left on the clock sealed the 79-25 win.
Sonoma State ended its non-conference portion of the 2011-12 season with Thursday's victory and will return to California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Saturday. The Seawolves will play host to longtime archrival Humboldt State at a special 1:00 p.m. start time from The Wolves' Den on the campus of Sonoma State University.
NOTE: Thursday's non-conference game between Sonoma State and William Jessup was played off-campus at Santa Rosa Junior College due to routine electrical maintenence work by the university that required power to be shut of between Dec. 26-29. Power has since been restored to the campus and the remainder of the 2011-12 home basketball schedule will be played on the SSU campus in The Wolves' Den.
