Men's Golf Surges To Second Place At Nationals

Jeremy Wendelken shot a 71 to lead the Seawolves' run on Wednesday.
NOBLESVILLE, Ind-  Despite flu-like symptoms that affected three Seawolves and knocked another completely out of action, the Sonoma State men's golf team turned in the best round of any team on Wednesday afternoon to move all the way up to second place at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship in Noblesville, Indiana.  The defending national champion Seawolves shot a 291 and, at the halfway point, find themselves just nine strokes back of first place Florida Southern.

Due to the withdrawal of freshman Alex Marry, the Seawolves' second-best golfer in round one, Sonoma was left to compete with just four golfers.  Unable to throw out a low score, every golfer had to come through...and they did.

Led by Jeremy Wendelken, who rebounded from Tuesday's 81 with a 71, all four Seawolves were at 74 or below.  Patrick Bauer shot a 74 for the second straight day and is now tied for sixth overall.  Janssen Todd, like Wendelken, made a huge comeback, answering an 82 on Tuesday with a 72 on Wednesday.  Ryan Carter stayed solid with a 74 of his own.

Sonoma State currently sits in a tie for second with Nova Southeastern at 604, one stroke ahead of fourth place Chico State.

Coach Verhunce was extremely impressed with his team's performance under such a unique situation on Wednesday.  "The team is getting checked out this evening and seems to be making a recovery," said Verhucne.  "We have a late tee time tomorrow, so hopefully everyone can get some rest tonight and tomorrow morning."

The tournament's second half gets underway with round three action, tomorrow at Sagamore Golf Club in Noblesville.
