ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Following their third place finish at the NCAA Super Regionals, the Sonoma State women's golf team will tee off in their first ever appearance at the National Championship Tournament on Wednesday from Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Arizona. The 13th-ranked Seawolves will be one of 12 teams that make up the championship field, with the winner being crowned the 2010 National Champion.
Their appearance in the tournament marks the quickest an SSU team has ever made a trip to the finals. In just their third season of existence, the women's golf team got to the nationals one year faster than the men's golf team. The men's golf team, however, won a national title in just their sixth season (2009)... only time will tell if the women can match that feat.
The Seawolves finished third last week at the NCAA Super Regionals, shooting 314-324-316--954 for the tournament. Freshman
Spencer Heller led the team with a second place finish after shooting 74-80-74--228.
The team will hit the course with the same five golfers they competed with last time out. In addition to Heller, Sonoma State will be represented by
Tess Russell,
Brittany Carrera,
Chelsa Helget, and
Tara Mortimeyer.
The championships will be held May 12-15, at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Arizona, and hosted by the Mesa Convention & Visitors Bureau and Grand Canyon University.
