ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Boosted by a very strong spring showing, including a national championship in men's golf, Sonoma State University surged to a 51st place finish in the 2008-09 Learfield Sports Director's Cup Standings. The Seawolves finished with 307 points to place them in the top 80% of all NCAA Division II schools.
It is the second-highest finish ever for Sonoma and their highest point total since the scoring formula changed several years ago.
In the Director's Cup standings, schools are able to accumulate points in up to 14 sports. Points are earned by qualifying and then advancing in NCAA Championship competition.
The Seawolves tallied points in six sports- mens' soccer, volleyball, baseball, softball, men's golf, and women's golf. They were able to gain the maximum points, 100, for their men's golf national championship.
Sonoma State's highest finish in the Director's Cup standings came in 1998-99, when the department came in 31st place.
Grand Valley State of Michigan earned the Division II title for the sixth consecutive year.
