LOS ANGELES -- Seniors
JJ Mina,
Mike Harris,
Brandon Glanz, and
Zen Maki ended their Sonoma State basketball careers with a bang in a 58-48 victory over Cal State L.A. on Saturday night in Los Angeles. Each senior contributed to the win with Mina leading the way with a career-high 16 rebounds to go with 11 points and four assists. Harris had a game-high 14 points. Maki had six points coming on a 6-for-6 night from the free throw line and Glanz had six points and four rebounds.
Most of Saturday night's contest was tightly-contested. The first half didn't see either team get a lead of more than eight points when Sonoma State led 22-14 with 7:42 left in the opening half. The Golden Eagles would get their deficit down to 27-24 heading to the half.
The Golden Eagles got the lead back early in the second half after a David Hall dunk made it 30-29, but
Khalid Johnson would give the Seawolves the lead back a minute later with a layup. The second half felt like Friday night's narrow defeat to Cal State Dominguez Hills, when both teams took multiple turns with the lead in the second half. There were 11 lead changes in the second half before the Seawolves would retake the lead for the last time on a Harris three-pointer to make it 46-43. The Harris three-pointer came in the midst of a 10-0 run for the Seawolves that sunk the Golden Eagles.
The Seawolves shot 38.6% (17-44) to the Golden Eagles 33.9% (19-56) from the field. Sonoma State was able to get to the charity-stripe 12 more times than the Golden Eagles and made it count. The Seawolves hit 18-23 free throws (78.3%) to the Golden Eagles 5-11 (45.5%). The Seawolves won the rebounding category, 38-31.
In addition to the great nights by Mina and Harris,
James Davis had 11 points.
David Ahern matched Mina's four assists.
David Hall led the Golden Eagles with 13 points. Chris Martin had 11 points.
