SAN FRANCISCO -- The Sonoma State men's tennis team opened up its 2013 campaign on Sunday, but was swept by NCAA Division I San Francisco, 7-0, at the Cal Club.
Matt Roberts stunned the 98th-ranked player in Division I, Thai Tu, with a 6-3 win in the first set, but Tu came back with a vengeance, taking the next two sets to earn the victory at No. 1 singles. Roberts would be the only SSU player that took a set off of the host Dons.
In doubles, Roberts and teammate
Ryan Harris played close with their opponents at the No. 2 position, but ultimately fell 8-4. The duos of
Robert Henry/
David Hutton and
Jimmy Manning/
Seth Hein at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, respectively, fell by identical scores of 8-1 to give San Francisco the 1-0 match lead.
In singles play,
Vincent Paganetti was the only other Seawolf, besides Roberts, to score more than two points in a set. After losing 6-1 in the opening set, Paganetti pushed his opponent, Jonathon Knowlman deep into the second frame, but Knowlman would come out on top at 7-5 to win the match at No. 6 singles. Henry (6-0, 6-2),
Drexler Dy (6-1, 6-1), Hutton (6-0, 6-2) and Harris (6-2, 6-0) all lost in straight sets on Sunday.
Sonoma State will return to the court on Wednesday when it travels to Moraga to take on another Division I school in Saint Mary's. First serve is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
