Seawolves Compete At UOP Invitational; Wrap Up Fall Season

STOCKTON, Calif.--  In its final tune-up in preperation for the spring season, the Sonoma State Men's Tennis team took on Division I and Junior College teams at the UOP Invitational, hosted by the Tigers of University of Pacific.

The three day tournament began on Friday with singles action where Seth Hein and Jimmy Manning competed in the white bracket.  In his frist match, Hein went up against Cal Poly's Gannon Daynes and, while putting up a fight, was defeated in straight sets 7-5, 6-3.  Dropping down to the consolation bracket, Hein played Eric Cederwall from Pacific.  Cederwall proved to be a strong opponent, beating Hein 6-1, 6-1.  Manning, on the other hand, was pitted against Jason Lee from the University of San Francisco in the round of 16.  The upper hand went to Manning in two sets, 6-1, 6-3, advancing him to the quarterfinals.  Cal Poly's Devin Barber met Manning in the quarterfinals where the two players battled back-and-forth in a three set thriller.  However, Barber was able to fight off the resillient Manning for a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 victory.

Friday continued with the black singles bracket, where Drexler Dy competed in the round of 16 against USF's Germaine Bahri.  In a two set match, Dy found himself on the wrong side, taking the 6-1, 6-4 loss.  Dy would continue to play on Friday in the consolation bracket, going up against California's Nikhil Jayashankar.  Dy never found his rhythm, falling to Jayashankar 6-1, 6-3.  Manning and Dy ended Friday's competition with a doubles match agaisnt Cal's Jordan Smith and Jayashankar.  Unfortunately, Dy and Manning could not compete with the pair from Berkeley, losing 8-3.

On day two, Sonoma State played in only doubles competition, taking part in a quarterfinal match and two consolation matches.  In an unconventional pairing, Hein played with Pacific's Carter Hafif in a quarterfinal match agaisnt Cal Poly's Daynes and Derek Klein.  Hein and his partner played hard, but were upended by the Klein/Daynes pairing, 8-3.  In the consolation quarterfinals Hein and Hafif lost again, this time to a USF doubles squad.  Dy and Manning moved on the the consolation semifinals by winning by default, due to an injury on the pairing from UC Davis.  The last match of the weekend for the Seawolves saw Dy and Manning fall in a heart breaking 8-6 loss to Alex Jackson and Bryce Purser from Modesto Junior College.

Sonoma State will not play again until they begin their spring season with a duel match against St. Mary's in Moraga on Jan. 23, 2013.
