Peterson, Krenwinkel Grab AVCA All-America Honors

Keala Peterson and Taylor Krenwinkel are All-America selections in 2009.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- For the second time in school history, a member of the Sonoma State women's volleyball team was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America team. This year's team produced not one, but two student-athletes on the All-America team -- sophomores Keala Peterson and Taylor Krenwinkel. It was announced Monday.

It is the first All-America honor for Peterson and Krenwinkel and the second and third for a Sonoma State volleyball student-athlete. Last season, former Seawolf Kristy Sather earned AVCA All-America Honorable Mention accolades -- she was the first in school history.

Peterson, a six-foot outside hitter from Sebastopol, earned All-America Third Team honors after ranking in the top 15 nationally in kills per set (4.18). She smashed 401 kills this season, breaking the single-season record for most kills by a sophomore. Peterson, who transferred from Division I UC Davis this season, also led the team with 13 double-doubles as well as 260 digs. She was a First Team All-CCAA selection and was also named to the AVCA All-West Region team this season.

Krenwinkel, an All-America Honorable Mention selection who was an AVCA All-West Region selection and a second team all-conference player, led the California Collegiate Athletic Association in digs per set with 4.73. With 539 digs this season, Krenwinkel set a new mark for most digs by a sophomore in a single-season and also went over the 1,000 dig milestone in her career. The 5-7 libero from San Diego has 1,062 career digs.

Sonoma State ended its 2009 season with a 23-8 record for the second straight year. In their third ever appearance in the postseason, the Seawolves fell in five sets to Cal State L.A. in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Tournament on Nov. 19.
