ROHNERT PARK, Calif- With the 2008-09 season just over a month away, now is a good time to look back on the success that met each and every Seawolf team last year. The Seawolves won two CCAA championships, three west region championships, and enjoyed high national rankings in what turned out to be one of the best all-around campaigns in school history.
Men's Soccer
NCAA Far West Region Champions
The men's soccer team had a season not to be forgotten in 2007. The Seawolves won a school-record 17 games in a row on their way to the first perfect conference season in the CCAA in seven years. Despite getting knocked off in the CCAA championship game, the Seawolves would not be denied the next weekend as they took the far west region championship on penalty kicks against host Cal State Dominguez Hills. The following weekend the Seawolves traveled to Wichita Falls, Texas to take on a talented Midwestern State squad in the NCAA Quarterfinals. Despite outplaying them for much of the game, the Seawolves were edged on penalty kicks and denied a trip to the Final Four. Andrew Bailey continued his superb career, breaking the school record for goals in a career and earning Far West Region and CCAA Player of the Year honors for the second straight year.
Marcus Ziemer was named CCAA and Regional Coach of the Year for his efforts. Overall Record: 19-3-3.
Women's Soccer
Sporting a roster that featured 14 freshmen and just five upper classmen, the women's soccer team surpassed all expectations, winning ten games for the 17th time in the last 20 years. Led by an impressive defense that allowed just 15 goals in 19 games, the Seawolves finished the season strong, winning four of their last five to nearly earn a playoff spot. Freshman Courtney Grixti was impressive, recording 11 shutouts on the season. Brittany Peterson was the team's leading scorer with four goals and an assist. The Seawolves went a span of six games in September without giving up a single goal, going 5-0-1 over that stretch. Four SSU players were named All-CCAA after the season. Overall Record: 10-7-2.
Volleyball
It was a tale of two seasons for the SSU volleyball team. The Seawolves struggled through the first half of the season before catching fire and winning eight of their final 11 games. During their impressive late season run, the Seawolves knocked off three ranked teams at home and picked up momentum for the 2008 season. Taylor Manton and Kristy Sather led the way with each earning First Team All-CCAA and All-West Region honors. Manton destroyed the school record for digs and Sather had a team-high 373 kills, the most by an SSU player since 2002. Sather also was named the CCAA Newcomer of the Year while first-year phenom Marianne Fox was named CCAA Freshman of the Year. Overall Record: 13-14.
Cross Country
Under first year head coach Mark James, the SSU cross country team had an exciting season. A small team made up primarily of freshmen, the Seawolves opened up some eyes in September when they won the Mills Invitational in Oakland. Kelly Harris was the Seawolves' top runner for most of the year before injuries took a toll late. The Seawolves finished ninth at the CCAA Championships and 22nd at the West Regional meet in Boise, Idaho.
Men's Basketball
After an exciting 5-1 start to the season, the men's basketball team stumbled a bit, finishing with an overall record of 11-15. That's not to say there wasn't a lot of excitement for the Seawolves in '07-'08. Fan favorite Andrew Kochevar closed out his remarkable career as a Seawolf as the all-time leader in three-point shooting and with the fifth-most points in school history. Kochevar was honored after the season with Second Team All-CCAA honors. SSU was 7-5 at home and continued their dominance of rival Chico State with another season sweep of the Wildcats. Overall Record: 11-15.
Women's Basketball
The women's basketball team enjoyed one of the most successful seasons in school history, winning 20 games and reaching the semi-finals of the inaugural CCAA Tournament. The Seawolves advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in the last 11 years and had three of their players bring home All-CCAA honors. Led by a trio of seniors- Danae Wellander, Genny Anderson, and Chelsey Armacost- the Seawolves got out to a 13-2 start and earned the first national ranking in school history midway through the season. The Seawolves were particularly tough to beat at home, winning 11 of their 14 home games. SSU had one of the top defenses in the region, holding opponents under 50 points on nine occasions. Overall Record: 20-10.
Baseball
CCAA Champions
NCAA West Region Champions
After losing four All-Americans to professional baseball in 2007, some thought it might be a rebuilding year for the SSU baseball program. Think again. The Seawolves rolled out to a 29-1 record on their way to the most victories in school history (52), their second straight CCAA title, and the first trip to the Division II 'World Series' in school history. After being stopped at the west regionals on several occasions, the '08 Seawolves simply would not be denied as they rolled through their regional opponents to earn a trip to Sauget, Illinois. SSU won their first two games at the World Series, one an unforgettable 19-inning affair, before being eliminated with back-to-back 2-1 defeats to national runner-up Ouachita Baptist. The Seawolves finished the season ranked third in the nation. As the wins came, so did individual honors as SSU players earned just about every major award possible. Matt Means was a First Team All-American, two others- Konrad Thieme and Ian Bridges- also earned All-American honors. Bridges was the CCAA Player of the Year, Kris Haycock was the CCAA Newcomer of the Year, and
John Goelz earned another CCAA Coach of the Year honor. David Adler was honored as the national defensive player of the year, another first in program history. Overall Record: 52-15.
Softball
A year after advancing to the NCAA West Regionals, the SSU softball team struggled through a trying season. Hampered by a litany of injuries and an extremely young team, the Seawolves got out to a 3-0 start before encountering a couple of tough stretches. Despite a 16-36 record, the Seawolves had a couple of outstanding performances. Newcomer Nicole Cordova hit .309 on her way to Second Team All-CCAA honors. Dani Lopez knocked four home runs and Brittany Williams was the team's ace with nine wins and a 2.62 ERA. Coach Wallin and the team are looking forward to the 2009 season. With some impressive returners, top recuits, and hopefully a few less injuries, the Seawolves hope to contend for a playoff spot. Overall Record: 16-36.
Men's Tennis
The men's tennis team had one of their best seasons in years as they advanced to the NCAA West Regionals for the third straight year. The Seawolves won their first five games of the season against NCAA Division II opponents and nearly knocked off several highly ranked teams. SSU lost by just one point to Division I UC Davis and knocked off a pair of D-I's in Santa Clara and Portland State. Andy Muesse led the team at No. 1 singles, finishing his career out with an 11-9 singles record. Connor Olson had 11 wins and QUan Vu had ten from the bottom of the lineup. The doubles team of Olson and Jeff Stollberg went 14-7, primarily at the No. 2 position. Overall Record: 9-13.
Women's Tennis
For a roster consisting entirely of underclassmen, the SSU women's tennis team fared pretty well against a schedule of veteran teams. Despite missing out on the NCAA West Regional Tournament, the Seawolves won six matches including a season sweep of Cal State San Bernardino and a win over Division III power UC Santa Cruz. Haley Hickock and Jeanette Peck each had nine wins to tie for team-high honors. Casey O'Connor earned All-CCAA honors with a 6-11 overall record at No. 2 singles. Overall Record: 6-11.
Men's Golf
CCAA Champions
NCAA West Region Champions
The SSU men's golf team continued to exceed all expectations in 2008. In just their fifth year of existence, the Seawolves reached the top Division II golf, ranking No. 1 in the nation for much of the year. The Seawolves won their first CCAA championship, then two weeks later took their first West Region championship in Petaluma. Jarin Todd continued his phenomenal career with his second straight National Player of the Year honor. He was named CCAA Player of the Year as well and had a bunch of other honors on here that we won't list right now. Todd was joined on the PING All-Region team by four of his teammates, Kyle Hopkins, Chris Galvin, Patrick Bauer, and Jacob O'Keefe. Bauer also won CCAA Freshman of the Year honors and became the first freshman golf All-American in school history. He is one of just two freshmen to earn All-American honors in school history. After stumbling at the national championship and finishing 16th, the Seawolves have just one goal in mind for 2009…a national title.
Women's Golf
The Sonoma State women's golf team got the ball rolling- literally- in their inaugural season. The Seawolves competed well and even won a tri-meet with Cal State East Bay and Dominican. Nikki Sprinkling led the team through the fall and Danielle Buckman, who joined the team at the semester, had a great spring season. The 2007-08 SSU women's golf team will always be known as the team that set the foundation for what is sure to be a great program.
Women's Water Polo
With a new head coach (former Olympian
Coralie Simmons) and quite a few new players, the SSU women's water polo team had a very solid season. Sharing the pool with some national powers, including eventual national champion UCLA, the Seawolves more than held their own. The team finished seventh in the WWPA Tournament and had an undefeated slate at their own Seawolf Splash. The majority of their losses came against bigger schools that play most of their sports at the NCAA Division I level (college water polo is not broken down by divisions). Burchard was named All-WWPA at the end of the season, capping off a fantastic two-year career at SSU. Samatha Mullins led the team with 50 goals and Lysa Lombard had an outstanding season in the net, recording 208 saves. Overall Record: 14-17.
The 2008-09 season is just around the corner. It gets started on August 17th when the soccer teams have exhibition games against Santa Rosa JC and the Sonoma County Sol. The regular season gets underway on August 29th when the volleyball squad hosts the Third Annual Seawolf Spike.
