Four Seawolves Earn Daktronics All-Region Nods

Matt Means leads the Seawolves into this week's NCAA West Regionals
ELLENSBURG, Wash-  Sonoma State's Matt Means and Ian Bridges were named to the Daktronics All-West Region First Team in voting announced today.  They were joined on the Second Team by David Adler and Kevin Asselin

The Daktronics All-West Region team, voted on by west region Sports Information Directors, is one of two All-Region teams selected.  The ABCA Team, voted on by coaches, will be announced in the near future. 

Matt Means, a First Team All-CCAA pick, is 8-1 with a 1.91 ERA this season.  A senior from Mountain View, Means led the Seawolves to a CCAA Tournament-opening win over Cal State Stanislaus last Thursday in Chico. 

Ian Bridges, the CCAA Player of the Year for 2008, is batting .406 with six home runs and 44 runs batted in.  He was named to the All-CCAA Tournament last weekend for his efforts in helping the Seawolves capture their fifth CCAA crown.  Bridges, a junior, hails from Valencia, California.

David Adler, a senior from Thousand Oaks, is batting .307 with 29 runs scored and six stolen bases.  Adler's most impressive stat is his perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.  He has not made an error in 166 chances at second base.

Kevin Asselin, a senior from Redwood City, is 7-2 with a 3.93 ERA.  He leads the team with three complete games and has sruck out 63 batters in 75.2 innings this season. 

Marquis Fleming of Cal State Stanislaus (11-4, 2.36 ERA) was named the region's Pitcher of the Year.  Jamie Nilsen of Central Washington (.468, 10 home runs) was tabbed Player of the Year.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Senior pitcher Nick O'Brien became the fifth player on this year's west region champion Sonoma State baseball team to sign a professional contract this week when he inked with the Joliet Jackhammers of the independent Northern League.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Sonoma State southpaw Matt Means was selected by the San Diego Padres on Friday in the 37th round of the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft.  He is the fourth Sonoma State player to here his name called in the draft.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Sonoma State pitcher Kevin Asselin was taken by the Chicago White Sox on Friday in the 30th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft.  Asselin was an All-Region selection for the Seawolves in 2008.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Sonoma State catcher Konrad Thieme was selected by the Florida Marlins on Friday in the 23rd round of the 2008 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft.  Thieme led the Seawolves with 19 home runs and 64 RBIs in 2008.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Sonoma State relief pitcher/third baseman Travis Babin was selected by the New York Mets on Friday in the 16th round of the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft.  The junior from Santa Clarita was drafted as a pitcher.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Sonoma State senior David Adler has been named the ABCA National Defensive Player of the Year.  The second baseman had an absolutely phenomenal season, committing no errors in 219 defensive chances in 2008.

SAUGET, Ill-  The best season in Sonoma State baseball history came to an end on Friday with a 2-1 loss to Ouachita Baptist at the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship in Sauget, Illinois.  It was the second straight 2-1 loss to the Tigers for the Seawolves as they finish their season at 52-15.  OBU will take on Mt. Olive on Saturday in the national championship game.
